Ce film fait partie de la "Trilogie allemande" de Syberberg, dans laquelle il présente l'évolution de l'histoire des idées en Allemagne à travers des figures historiques. Hitler, un film d’Allemagne est une œuvre impressionnante, audacieuse et inclassable de 7 heures, une réflexion ultrastylisée sur le traumatisme du nazisme avec des « acteurs-marionnettes » qui récitent leur textes devant des décors qui ne sont que des diapositives projetées. Avec ce film, le réalisateur a cherché à affronter le passé nazi, à en déconstruire la mythologie, à réfléchir sur le phénomène de masse qui a contribué à l’ascension d’Hitler et à montrer la fascination de toute une génération. Hitler, un film d’Allemagne évoque avec ironie le procès que Hitler n’a jamais subi, le plus grand spectacle de la terre, une répétition de la fin du monde …
